Return of the Dittos edition by Dale Andrew White Literature Fiction eBooks

The author of "Moe Howard Died For Our Sins" returns with another collection of hilarious short stories.
"Whether writing about the end of the world, terrorist swans, entering the afterlife or high school journalism, White entertains with clever asides, obvious (and some not-so-obvious) puns, and cultural and societal pokes. His stories combine satire, slapstick, innuendo, and outright silliness. All of it is punctuated with interesting, quirky characters." Seattle Post-Intelligencer
"White has a wonderful talent for engaging the unexpected, and his quick turns are wild and fun." Book Review.com.
"Some of his stories come across as being written in the classic style of Mark Twain and the British satirist Saki... Still others comes across with the raw, in-your-face humor worthy of Comedy Central." ReaderViews.com.
"A unique assortment of stories, each as entertaining as the last, 'Return of the Dittos' is a collection that short fiction lovers must get." Midwest Book Review

I thoroughly enjoyed the style and wit of this author who has a grasp of the ridiculous plight of human beings---yet without turning his stories into demeaning satire. He suspends reality just a teeny bit to make it fun. If I had to choose a favorite story "The Labors of Peon" would win; it had me chuckling out loud and rereading certain passages for the sheer delight of tongue-in-cheek.Product details

Return of the Dittos edition by Dale Andrew White Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book is pure whimsy. Each chapter is dripping with sarcasm and tongue-in-cheek humor which is great. Throughout the book, then, there is a common tone even though each story is very different. There's also a certain tone of poking fun at the banality of basic, everyday events like a job as a grocery bag boy or an old man spending his golden years going to every civic meeting he can.
I particularly liked the stories that veered more into actual storytelling than sounding like a newspaper article. It kept my attention more to read about the quarrel between the two women on the Women's Council than about the guy fronting a terrible country band with an inflated sense of success. With the short stories that actually read more like stories, the imagery was much more compelling. I could better imagine what the pie-obsessed girl looked like when she went on her final rampage through the town because of the author's rich descriptions. It was always a bit over-the-top, but that was the point in these stories. Hyperbole was really the star of the show. And, if you approached the book in a good mood and were open to be entertained, that touch of whimsy in taking normal characteristics and exploding them out into larger-than-life depictions is often quite humorous and just fun.
This would be a lovely book to keep on the nightstand. You can read a short story each evening with no worry of remembering the details when you pick up the book again. They all feel like they belong together in this book as they all fit the overall tone of the collection, but each concerns a completely different subject matter, making it more likely to appeal to a wider audience. (Although, I will say that I was disappointed in the last two stories' placement. It left me with an unfortunately sad and morose feel for the book to have a story about the death of a church's parishioner--albeit with an uplifting ending to see how she'd touched so many lives--and a story about the end of the world--also here is evident how the author is poking fun at the seriousness his characters sometimes place in the insignificant everyday details of life, like caring about what to wear or how the house looks.)
Overall, though, this book was packed full of creativity and wonderful writing. The author really understands how to bring a story and characters to life, which is exceptionally difficult in short stories. Excellent writing. Fun, whimsical, hyperbolic storytelling.
This book deserves no stars. I should have known by A.) the few reader reviews, and B.) the poorly written Editorial Reviews from sources I've never hear of.
The few stories I managed to read are not funny. They're written as if meant for a screenplay for a bad pre-teen movie. Author re-attempts to be funny on every page, but fails. Here's an example from Page 14 of author describing a supervisor at a local grocery story
"Miss Shank, Higgler's head cashier and loyal henchwoman, manned the bottom tier of this control tower. Nicknamed by her staff as "The Face That Stopped a Thousand Time Clocks," the matron of our work camp bared her incisors at any minion she suspected of timecard fraud. Her starched uniform was a stiff as her spine, her black hair cropped so short you could hear the follicles scream.
She glanced at my job application and summoned her master. 'Mr. Higgler, we got fresh meat.' "
I hate to write bad reviews. People often work hard and even if it isn't great you look for the good, right? I hung in for a few stories and closed it. Am going to return it instead of passing it onto others indicating that it could be worth reading.
These short stories by Dale Andrew White (D.A.W.) are pretty good. But as I read through them, I can't help but wonder what would David Foster Wallace (D.F.W.) have done with these ideas? I can't help but to make the answer they would be more coherent, have a stronger purpose in the arc of the book, and would be a level above in wit. Some the stories, such as "On the Road with Confederate Thunder" feel as if they begin abruptly and end even more abruptly as if we get the joke, let's move on shall we?
This happens to fit into my lunchtime regimen of short stories on my Android, but I really don't have an overwhelming urge to read or finish, and may soon get another ready novel.
